Introduction to BioTechnologies

Have you ever thought about having your surgery practiced by a robot? Or holding your unborn
3D-printed child in your arms? Or not having the flu anymore? Well, even if it seems completely
unreal, these kinds of disruptive technologies are actually being developed in the medical sector.

Without a shadow of a doubt, technology has become one of the fundamental drivers of our
daily routines, but most of us perceive the idea of it as uniquely linked to devices and to the invention
of products and services able to make our lives much easier. On the other hand, the emerging
innovations within the medical sector have been among the most errant in the last decade and by
2020 BioTech’s global market size amounted to € 513 billion.
Nowadays, Biotechnologies cover different areas aimed to provide benefits to human health such as
Nanomedicine, tissue engineering, gene editing or even 3D Bioprinting. Even though the revolutions
within this large industry are evolving and growing faster than ever, this sector still hasn’t driven a
transformative impact on our lives.
